Digital transformation has been ever-present in many companies’ over the last few years, but the challenges 2020 has brought, in the form of the coronavirus pandemic, have sharpened this focus to an acute and imminent reality. This is particularly prevalent when thinking about the mobile industry. It has traditionally been rooted in the physical domain: from bricks and mortar retail stores to plastic SIM cards. However, with consumers growing ever more accustomed to, and expectant of, digital, non-contact solutions, it is a necessity for the mobile industry to make that transformation a priority. Pioneering Mobile Technology Over the next couple of years, this surge in digital demand will mean the physical SIM card will soon be consigned to history. Destined to be another example of a clunky stepping-stone on the path to technological nirvana, alongside mobile pagers, MP3 players and Palm Pilots. It will be remembered in moments [...]

The SIM card is soon to be consigned to history. Destined to be another example of an, as then, much needed, but now seen as a rather clunky stepping-stone on the path to technological nirvana, alongside mobile pagers, MP3 players and Palm Pilots. It’ll be remembered in moments of nostalgia as that fiddly bit of plastic, accessed only through deft use of a bent-out paperclip. The replacement: eSIM – a chip soldered directly into the mobile device, rightly deserves to be seen as much more than a simple upgrade. Yes, it allows you to connect a device without a paperclip, but that really is just the start of the story… Seamless mobile experiences In today’s ‘new norm’ of remote working, social distancing and needing everything to be readily available without stepping out of the home, the shift in retail to online shopping has increased exponentially. The physical nature [...]

It wasn’t too long ago that if you wanted to listen to your favourite artist’s new album, you had to pop into town and buy physical media (CDs or cassette tapes). That seems almost archaic today – now we can listen to just about any song we want in seconds simply by digitally downloading it. Well, the very same thing is about to happen to the SIM cardClick here to read the full article from Direct Mobiles click here.
At first glance, eSIM technology looks like a welcome evolution of the physical SIM that billions of people use every day around the world to get their mobile devices connected. Instead of first acquiring, then inserting, a plastic SIM card into our phones, we’ll simply be downloading them over the Internet, in the same way we download music today instead of purchasing CDs. But if we look deeper, eSIM is actually revolutionising mobile, and those organisations that embrace the technology quickly, will steal a march on their competition. The benefits of eSIM, over and above quick and easy device activation, are well known. Firstly, the removal of the SIM tray in devices enables much smaller and more water-resistant devices. Then, the costs and logistics around SIM card distribution, as well as the environmental waste impact, disappear and lastly, IoT devices can now be hermetically sealed from their outside environments and allow the network provider of a large estate of devices to [...]

Simply put, an eSIM is an electronic SIM that is designed to supersede the physical SIM card that has slotted into phones and smartphones for decades. Unlike existing SIM cards, though, an eSIM is embedded into the device itself and cannot be removed and put in another phone or tablet. We caught up with Gary Waite, Head of eSIM Strategy at Sim Local who believes it's only a matter of time before eSIMs become the norm. To read the full article click here
Why the eSIM Winners are Going Global eSIM is already revolutionising mobile. It has made connecting everyday mobile devices much easier and quicker. It has enabled new smaller device categories, such as smart-watches and fitness trackers. It has opened avenues of universal connectivity for laptops and has raised the bar on the potential for IoT. But what is really exciting about eSIM is that it unshackles mobile network operators (MNO’s) from their traditional national boundaries, allowing them to provide services far beyond that, and leverage their brands on a global scale. Thanks to sponsorship of major sporting teams, events and ubiquitous exposure on international media, MNOs are already among the most visible brands in the world today. However, even the largest MNOs have a customer-base limited to no more than a dozen countries of operation, whereas other equally recognisable brands such as Coca Cola, Nike and Apple see their products [...]

Digital SIMs Make Phones Waterproof The Times, 25 August 2020 Smartphones could soon be waterproof as the need for physical SIM cards disappears, experts believe. One of the greatest obstacles in making phones waterproof has been protecting the holes in SIM-card trays. But tech giants such as Apple, Samsung and Google are making sure their new models work with digital SIM cards, which are simply downloaded on to the phone. Gary Waite, of Sim Local, which provides prepaid local SIM cards to international travellers, said phones would soon come without a tray. This will also help to ensure they are waterproof. “The holes like the one for the speaker can all be made waterproof quite easily,” he said. “But the SIM tray is a real problem as if you get water in there, that’s really bad news.” Digital SIM cards will also allow people travelling abroad [...]
