QA Automation Lead (AI-Driven Testing)

Engineering  |  Dublin, Ireland (Remote/Hybrid or Remote in EU)

Sim Local is a leading global travel eSIM provider, helping millions of travelers stay connected in over 200 destinations worldwide. Through a combination of local operator partnerships, innovative digital products, and omnichannel distribution, we deliver seamless connectivity experiences for international travelers.

We're looking for a QA Automation Lead to own quality across our products and lead test automation in a small, collaborative engineering team.

Quality is a shared responsibility here: you’ll own every release alongside the developers who build it, from the first conversation to production. You’ll lead with automation and AI, and you’ll also get hands-on, whether that’s testing eSIMs on real devices or setting up a sandbox for a partner.

What You'll Achieve

Every time a traveler lands in a new country and their eSIM just works, that's the quality you helped build. In this role, you'll shape Sim Local ships.

  • Make shipping fast and safe. Turn releases into routine, low-risk events, so the team ships more often and knows quickly when something breaks.
  • Protect the moments that matter most. Own end-to-end coverage of the journeys our customers and revenue depend on: eSIM purchase and checkout, installation and activation, top-ups, and partner orders through our Partner API.
  • Build the foundation everyone runs on. Create the test identities, eSIM profiles and order data that every developer and partner sandbox uses, so partners can integrate with us faster and with confidence.
  • Remove the blind spots. Run the full flow across our web store, mobile app, partner stores and the services behind them, on every release.
  • Define what “ready to release” means. Give each release clear evidence of what it depends on and what has been tested and set the quality bar with the team.
  • Shape how we test with AI. Find the AI tools and practices that work for us, and make them part of how the whole team tests.

Key Responsibilities

1. Test Automation Leadership

  • Own and evolve our test automation strategy and frameworks across web, mobile app and APIs
  • Write, maintain and run automated UI, API and integration tests in our CI/CD pipelines, steadily reducing manual regression

2. AI-Driven Testing

  • Use AI tools to generate test cases, build and maintain self-healing automated tests, and create realistic test data
  • Use AI to analyse code changes and risk, so we run the right tests at the right time
  • Evaluate new AI testing tools and share what works with the team

3. Shift-Left Quality & Coaching

  • Take part in feature discussions from day one, shaping acceptance criteria and risks before code is written
  • Coach developers on test scenarios, test design and writing good automated tests
  • Review test coverage in pull requests and set clear quality standards with the team

4. Hands-On Testing & Environments

  • Test eSIM purchase, installation and activation on real iOS and Android devices across operators and destinations, including during network onboarding
  • Set up and maintain sandbox and test environments for partners and clients integrating with our Partner API
  • Run exploratory testing on new features, and investigate and reproduce issues reported by customers or partners

5. Documentation

  • Write and maintain test plans, test cases, release checklists and QA processes
  • Keep partner-facing sandbox and testing documentation up to date

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or other relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years in QA or software testing, including at least 3 years building and maintaining test automation
  • Strong programming skills in TypeScript/JavaScript or Java, and a track record of building test software other engineers keep using
  • Extensive experience with modern automation frameworks such as Playwright, WebdriverIO, Cypress or Selenium
  • Mobile test automation for iOS and Android (e.g. Appium), or testing hybrid/React Native apps
  • Designing test strategies, test plans and test cases, including risk-based regression for frequent releases
  • Hands-on use of AI in testing (AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, or AI testing tools) to write, maintain or prioritise tests, with real examples of its impact
  • Testing journeys across APIs, services, web or mobile clients and third-party systems (e.g. network operators, payment providers), with sound judgement about what to test at which layer
  • Creating reusable test data and environments, and running automated tests in CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, AWS CodePipeline or similar)
  • Investigating failures with logs, monitoring and crash reports, and explaining the risk plainly to engineers and non-engineers
  • Solid manual and exploratory testing skills, and a willingness to get hands-on with devices and environments
  • Working closely with developers in a cross-functional Agile team using Jira and Confluence, and coaching others on testing
  • Clear, well-organised written documentation

Desirable

  • Experience with multi-tenant or white-label products, and with onboarding new clients or brands
  • Testing payment flows end to end using provider sandboxes
  • Background in telecom, eSIM, travel or e-commerce
  • Familiarity with AWS
  • Performance, load, security or visual regression testing experience

Personal Qualities

  • Strong quality focus — takes ownership of every release, from the first conversation through to production
  • Proactive — spots gaps and risks early, and feels empowered to fix them
  • Maintains and defends high-quality standards with good testing practices and habits
  • Collaborative, clear communicator with developers, product and non-technical stakeholders
  • Passionate about quality and eager to keep learning, especially new AI tools and smarter ways to test

What We Offer

  • Fully remote or hybrid — join the team in our Dublin 16 office whenever you like, or skip the long commute
  • Competitive salary, depending on experience

For full-time employees based in Ireland

  • 21 days' annual leave, plus an extra day for each complete year worked, up to 25 days per year
  • Summer Fridays — half days on Fridays throughout the summer
  • Pension scheme
  • Referral scheme
  • Maternity benefit

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a company that cares about its people, likes to promote talent from within, and is continually growing in new markets. If you don't have all the requirements, but this could be the right role for your career, apply for this position. We are looking for the best cultural fit.

Candidates based outside Ireland will be engaged as independent contractors and will need to invoice Sim Local monthly (e.g. as a sole trader or through their own company).
