Visiting USA, UK, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Hong Kong or another country Three covers? Here's the fast answer: a Three UK eSIM from Sim Local is a prepaid plan you buy online and install in about three minutes. UK plans include unlimited UK calls and texts and a UK phone number. Plans for trips beyond the UK are data-only and cover roaming in 70+ destinations. No contract, no store visit and no roaming bill.
Three is one of the UK's main mobile networks. A Three UK eSIM puts that network on your phone as a digital SIM, so there's no plastic card to post or swap. You buy online, install it with one tap or a QR code, and you're connected. If the idea is new to you, our guide to how travel eSIMs work covers the basics.
Every Three plan at Sim Local is prepaid: you pay once, use it for the plan's length (30 days, or 90 on the long unlimited plan) and there's no monthly bill waiting for you at home. Plans connect to 5G where it's available and 4G elsewhere, so you need a 5G-compatible phone to get 5G speeds. Expect strong coverage in major cities and urban areas; signal and speeds can vary in remote or rural areas.
You may have read that Three and Vodafone UK merged. According to Vodafone's own merger FAQ, the two brands keep operating separately for now and "existing contracts, plans, pricing and customer support remain unchanged". Nothing about buying or using a Three eSIM changes for you.
If you're only going to one place, a destination plan gives you 18GB for 30 days. These are the destinations available for you:
Plan | Data | Validity | Type |
12GB | 30 days | Data only | |
18GB | 30 days | Data only | |
30GB | 30 days | Data only | |
18GB | 30 days | Data only | |

Coverage is strongest in major cities and urban areas; in remote or rural areas, signal and speeds depend on the local network. Planning a specific trip? Our guides to the best eSIM plans for the USA, the best eSIM for Australia and the best eSIM for Hong Kong compare your options in more depth.
The right plan comes down to how long you're staying and how you use your phone. Check your phone's mobile data usage history for a real number rather than a guess, then match it like this:
If you'll also be travelling on from the UK, look at the roaming column in the table above: every UK plan includes roaming data in 70+ destinations, from 6GB on the 20GB plan up to 30GB on the unlimited plans.
That's it, activation takes about three minutes.
Using one of the plans for travelling outside the UK? Switch Data Roaming on for the Three line as well, or the phone won't connect to data abroad. Three's own Pay As You Go roaming eSIM page also recommends having 4G calling (VoLTE) enabled, because some networks abroad are phasing out 2G and 3G.
This is where Three's UK plans differ from most travel eSIMs. Every UK plan includes a local UK phone number, unlimited UK minutes and unlimited UK texts, on top of data. That means you can book restaurants, take delivery calls and get text codes from UK banks and apps without relying on WhatsApp. It's also why the UK plans suit people who are moving to the UK to study and need a number that works from day one.
The plans for travel outside the UK are different: they are data-only and don't include a local number. You can still make calls over the internet with apps like WhatsApp, Skype or FaceTime.
A Three eSIM isn't only for people landing in London. Three's roaming covers 70+ destinations: its own roaming eSIM page says its data packs work in "over 70 Go Roam destinations". At Sim Local, you can reach them in two ways: with the roaming allowance that comes with every UK plan, or with a plan made for the country you're visiting. These all keep you off expensive data roaming rates, and all are data-only with hotspot included.
The Global plans cover destinations across Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania in one eSIM. They're a good fit if your trip takes in more than one country. The UK isn't on the Global list, so use a UK plan if you're visiting the UK.
Both are major UK networks and Sim Local sells both. Where they differ is plan size, plan length and what's stated about roaming and speed. Here's how the plans compare on Sim Local:
Three UK | EE | |
Mid-size plan | 100GB, 30 days | 80GB, 30 days |
Large plan | 200GB, 30 days | 150GB, 30 days |
Unlimited | 30 or 90 days | 14, 30 or 90 days |
Shortest plan | 30 days | 7 days (40GB) or 14 days (Unlimited) |
Roaming data on plan page | Stated: up to 6GB, 12GB, 18GB or 30GB | Not stated on the EE network page |
Speed | 5G where available, 4G elsewhere | EE's FAQ says pay-as-you-go customers connect on 4G |
Choose Three if you want more data in a comparable plan, a clearly stated roaming allowance, or a long unlimited plan. Choose EE if you only need a week or two. You can see every plan on our EE eSIM page.
Choose a plan, pay online and check your email for a 4-digit confirmation code and download instructions. Then install the eSIM with one tap in the Sim Local app, or scan the QR code. Activation takes about three minutes. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be unlocked.
Yes. The UK plans are prepaid, with a UK number and unlimited UK calls and texts, so you can buy before you fly and choose when to install. Three's own Pay As You Go eSIM page doesn't say whether visitors can buy it, which is one reason many travellers buy a prepaid plan online instead.
Not as a free add-on. A Three eSIM comes with a plan: Three's own site sells eSIMs with its plans and Pay As You Go data packs, and at Sim Local you buy a prepaid plan. Plans are affordable, but not free.
Yes. Every UK plan includes roaming data in 70+ destinations (up to 6GB, 12GB, 18GB or 30GB depending on the plan). You can also buy a Global plan or a plan for a single destination such as the USA, Australia or Brazil. Switch Data Roaming on for the Three line when you're abroad.
The five UK plans do: a local UK number plus unlimited UK minutes and texts. The Global and destination plans are data-only with no number, so use WhatsApp, Skype or FaceTime for calls.
Yes. Every Three plan at Sim Local is prepaid. You pay once, use it for 30 days (or 90 on the long unlimited plan) and there's no contract or monthly bill.
It works with most eSIM-compatible phones, including recent iPhone, Samsung and Google Pixel models, as long as the phone is unlocked. Check the eSIM compatible phones list before you buy.
It connects to 5G where available and to 4G elsewhere, and you need a 5G-compatible phone for 5G speeds. Hotspot is included on every plan; data you share counts toward your allowance.
Whether you're landing in London or flying on to the USA, Australia or Brazil, there's a Three plan for it. Pick your length from the tables above, or browse every eSIM plan for the United Kingdom to compare networks, and be connected in minutes.
